An Oriental Calico, long finned double fantail Koi,
with globe (demekin) eyes

Materials: styrofoam, plaster cast, fiberglass, paint, silver,
copper, mirror glass, faceted glass, steel and PVC piping

The ancient breeding of "Nishikigoi" (colored carp) goes back to the rein of Gengkis Khan in China and the early 1800's in Japan, and later the 1900's in America. It is an honored profession that can bring great monetary rewards. An 8 inch koi usually costs around $200 (US) and is a must for all oriental garden ponds.
Koi can live to 50 years of age and on occasion noteworthy ones can live to be over 100 years old. It is believed that a koi named Hanako from Gifu, Japna lived to be 226 years old. These peaceful and friendly fish can grow to over 3 feet in length and can be very expensive to those collectors of rare colors and unusual breeds, bringing upwards of over $100,00 each.
The koi are called "living works of art, living jewels" by all enthusiasts and the images of carp on windsocks are hung to wish all children successful lives in the future on Children's Day (Kodomo-No-Hi) on May 5th of each year. The oriental koi represents strength , youth, vigor, courage, patience and a successful life.
