Sardonyx is a member of the Quartz family very similar to all the other agates and onyxes such as carnelian and black onyx. It is displays the colors of brown, white and gray. The word sardonyx comes from the Greek term "Sard" derived from Sardis, the capital of Lydia, in Asia Minor. As legend would hold, the wearer of this type of quartz would be protected from sorcery and evil spirits, and also receive help in the healing of all wounds.
