May is Emerald Month

Traditionally, the cool green emerald symbolized spring and appropriately has been associated with the spring month of May. Emeralds are known for their rarity and great beauty. They were the favorite gem of Cleopatra and Marc Anthony. The world's major source of fine emeralds is the country of Columbia, South America.

Generally, a medium dark green emerald costs more than a similar-sized diamond. For example an excellent one carat emerald may cost up to $30,000.00. They are admired for their beauty and almost all emeralds have natural inclusions and fissures called, "jardin." These fissures are usually oiled or treated with dye to enhance stability and color brilliance. They are the green member of the Beryl family with a hardness of 7.5 to 8.

Ancient legends hold that the Egyptians believed that this stone helped in fertility and rebirth. Very careful wear must be exercised by the owner, because the stone is brittle and can be scratched with normal exposure. In some larger cities, the emerald is the choice for engagement rings over the favored diamond.

Because of this gemstone's great popularity and rarity, manufacturers have found methods of crystal growth to duplicate nature in both chemically and mineralogical composition. The most exact is the "Chatham Emerald." It so closely resembles a natural Columbian, even sharing their inclusions, that only trained gemologists can tell the difference.

Emeralds are believed to be an excellent jewelry accessory for dark-haired women and medium to light skin tones, but certainly are a great choice for anyone interested in this truly beautiful gemstone.
